I recently hosted a bridal shower for a good friend. It was a first for me, but a great experience. The wedding is a non-traditional wedding on the beach, so we had plenty of room for creativity in the shower.
We didn't break too many molds, but I think we really excelled in the food area. We decided to have a Salad Bar. We had basic salad, grilled chicken, salami, carrots, cucumber, olives, cheese, bell peppers, sunflower seeds, almonds, croutons, bacon bits, and an array of dressings, along with a wonderful pasta salad. We followed this with bread and dips for the guests.
For dessert, an aunt brought lemon bars and a caramel bread. For fun, we had a Cupcake Bar, where guests could use a huge selection of decor and treats, and decorate their own cupcakes. We then let them show them to the bride, and the favorite won a prize. This dessert idea was stellar because we did not have to fork over $3 per cupcake from one of those high-end cupcakery places that are all the rage. We got that fun feel, and let the cakes get personal. One of the guests decorated her cupcake to resemble the bride's dog. It was adorable! Doing this was also easy for transportation and time put into the desserts before the party.
Another fun thing we did, was that the other hostess and myself went in on a gift for the bride. We decided to get a nice glass vase from Crate & Barrel and filled it with flowers to use as decor for the shower, as well as her gift. You could also do this with serving dishes that the bride registered for, but use them for the food. Be sure to wash them before she takes them home, or else you are giving her a chore too!
Most importantly, the bride had a great time, seeing people from all aspects of her life, and enjoyed celebrating the upcoming big day.
